77 Camaro: 1st Glance

Welcome!

This Blog serves as a (hopefully successful) source of info specific to my 77 Chevy Camaro. My main reason was to compile as much as I can from what I have learnt into one source for others to benefit from. Making changes and/or upgrades alone can be a daunting task, and the more you learn the more it helps you to spend your money (and time) more wisely... so without further ado -

BACKGROUND::

in the struggle for decent power, mileage, drive-ability and more knowledge ive decided to share what ive learnt and done and will do with my first chevy. Im a shadetree mechanic - Ill try almost anything, and hope it works :) First motor I rebuilt was a 1978 Honda cb750 single cam bike - it rode for 5 years b4 it got stolen! Im no maverick - just a regular guy who is too broke for new cars, and loves old cars too much anyway too care. This blog will hopefully be around for many years to aid some ppl with some of the issues Ive experienced - I am not a race driver, more of a performance street slash (GnR?) daily driver, so alot of the info here will be for mileage and power at the same time. I do not have a dyno, flowbench or advanced equipment but I do have a wallet, an odometer and a love of power. Alot of what I have learnt is from chevy HP books and forums. I have spent hundreds of hours reading about all this and I hope some of you will find some very useful info here :)

After buying a 1977 camaro 350 (and my first v8!!) in 2012 - naturally I was thrilled and very excited to get started! So join me as I waft inconclusively through the repairs, etc.

This blog is a source of info I struggled to find elsewhere - feel free to leave comments / suggestions :)

For Starters ::
Once a stock inline 6 motor (that means the body/suspension parts should be more rigid had it been a v8) - this one came with the following:

Chevy 350 (not sure what heads yet)

edelbrock Sp2p intake
edelbrock / weber 4106 carb - endurashine
TH350 column shift
8 into 1 2" exhaust with a single cat / stock muffler (witha  huge tear)
stock tires / rims
2.73 rear end 8.5"
GM HEI dizzy - stock
manual brakes (new booster type master cylinder in the trunk)

First impressions / pics :) (after a car wash!)

The guy thought it was the motor using oil and thought it was junk, that would explain the ridiculous price I got her for :)

First minor fixes:

The car ran VERY well when I got her. Started well in cold mornings, and drove very nicely. Trans got a little hot though, and the oil switch leaked BADLY. $10 and i sorted that out..

Seatbelts were loose - I bought 2 spacer nuts from home Depot and bolted both sides nice and tight.

Carb:: The 2 front mixture screws were not the same amount of turns in - she smelled a little bit on the rich side. I counted turns in (2.75 and about 2) - divided the total and turned them back in, then proceeded to do the fast idle adjustment per edelbrock/weber. Tail pipe smells bit better and there was a little bit of smoothness and response after the adjustment.

dot dot dot...

There we have it - enough for one page I think.. fill you in as things progress..
Safe motoring and God bless :)
